Harlech Castle was built by Edward I when he invaded Wales from 1282 to 1289. The castle itself is part of a chain of castles to keep the then rebellious Welsh in check. He also wanted to have Wales for the English crown as Kings and Queens are wanton to do if they get the chance. I'm no historian but one can see that this castle presents a very intimidating presence to control the local population if they have a mind to rebellion. The castle sits atop a nice piece of rock that can be seen for miles around and as with most castles makes it near impossible to breach. These days a couple a laser guided missiles would take out the place very quickly but in the medieval period a high position, very thick defensive walls and a lots arrows reigning down from above was what one needed to defend oneself from hostile forces.
If your passing that way or you have an interest in history then Harlech Castle is definitely worth a visit, photos can only convey a tiny essence of what it really is and the time and place it represents.
